It being after 5, the landscapers are probably not coming today. And with tomorrow being a holiday, they probably won't show at all this week. So my carefully rehearsed "Ten cuidado con mis flores!" and "Tienes que matar a los malezas." and "Puedes matarlo? *points to fern* Es una hierba mala." are all for naught. Who says four years of Spanish wouldn't get me anything? (Disclaimer: I did have to look up how to say weed. The rest I remembered.)

In looking up my plants last night, I did learn a few things. Lantana is a fairly not nice plant, with noxious berries and leaves that can cause skin irritation. Hence why my hands get slightly itchy after pruning. Also, the yellow leaves I've been pinching off indicate root rot due to over watering. Oops. And I should probably be watering my cactus slightly more often than once a month. Twice a month spring-fall, once a month in winter.

I had a dream that the Isles had gotten Simon Gagne and was happy. Then I woke up and was sad.

Awww, man, Markus Naslund signed with the Rangers. I used to like him. :-(

I think that's it for now. Zhai'helleva.

The Captain And Me [03 Jul 2008|02:49pm]

There’s something immensely satisfying about addressing one’s mail in Sharpie.  And with that Sharpied name on there, off goes the story about The Hive to the Captain Crazypants L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest!  Oh, Captain. If only this contest were your sole legacy.

Anyway, I made a few changes to it, some per the suggestions of The Writing Group, some because on reading through it I just decided on a whim to change it because I can. And I’m hoping The Hive is an intriguing enough character to do some winning for me.  I think its an interesting sort, anyway. We’ll see if I’m the only one soon enough, I guess.

OMG! Squee!!!!111eleventy!!! [03 Jul 2008|11:57am]

Many people probably don’t know that I’m a huge fan of Terry Moore – the comic artist of Strangers in Paradise fame. He’s one of the few very successful independent artists. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons I like his work. DC and Marvel really don’t hold my interest like the independents do.

Anyway, I went next door for my crack, I mean latest Terry Moore offering. He’s doing a new series, BTW. I’m really enjoying it. So I went to get Echo #4 and the owner of the shop said he had something for me. He rummaged for a moment behind the counter and handed me TWO signed Terry Moore prints from SiP. I am a fan-girly puddle of melted goo right now.

David said that he got them at a trade show recently and thought of me so he was keeping them under the counter for the next time I came in. That’s pretty amazing since I don’t really buy that many comics. Either I’m the only Terry Moore fan that shops there (something I seriously doubt) or the most obnoxious. In any case, I’m thrilled!

Windows XP networking question - every second counts [03 Jul 2008|09:18am]

marginoferror
Windows XP takes several seconds - four or five - to establish a network connection even after the network cable is connected. This is the case even if DHCP is not used. This time drops to below one second if there is an existing connection that is only interrupted briefly, but that is not the case for us.

We need to reduce this amount of time the computer takes to establish a network connection after the connection is established between the computer and the DSL router/modem (the connection from the modem to the internet is uninterrupted). Anyone have any ideas on where to start? Does Linux take the same amount of time? Is it related to the hardware? (I don't think it is.)

Holiday weekend, trip to Lancaster planned for Sat and I'm coming down
with either allergies (hope) or a cold (I so hope not). Lots of sinus
pressure and stuffiness. Some scratchy to my throat but that could be
the smoke at the meeting last night.

Damn.

Yes. It really is 3am.
Yes. I really should be asleep.
Yes. Especially so since I have a dentist appt at 1pm.
However...
Emily and I have spent the last hour and a half watching a stunning display of mixed sheet/bolt lightning - and discussing politics - since neither of us would sleep through the constant flashing and rumbling. We had an impressive five minute stretch where one roll of thunder hadn't ended before the next one started!
Absolutely amazing.
You don't see colours quite like that anywhere else in nature.
Here's to mother nature's independence day displays! I think she beats our fireworks. :)

Now that it's all calmed down to intermittent flashes and dull roars, we're heading off to bed.
G'night all!

Man, is Linköpings gonna suck this year. No Matt, no Tony, no Staal, no Melichar, no Stana, no Patric. Screwed.

I'm up to three bids. Zomg. I are GIDDY. I'm also bidding on way too much stuff. C'mon, isn't this sketch of Manny adorable?

Skirt progress at 25.6%. 60 stripes completed. Which puts me at 21 stripes done today. I'm cracking down on myself since I want it done for July 19th.

As I mentioned earlier, I have to water our plants most days. We've got a row of very happy impatiens, a small edging of fairly happy floral verbena, and two hanging lantana. The lantana aren't quite as happy. One is coming back pretty well after I ruthlessly pruned off all the dead parts. There wasn't as much to prune off on the other, and it's coming back more slowly. I just found out tonight that the bulbous things on the plant are berries that I should also remove to improve flowering.

What really bugs me are our 'landscapers.' They come around once a week to mow the lawn. And that's all they do unless we specifically ask them to do things. Like maybe, get rid of the crabgrass and other weeds in the lawn? Or put down seed in the dead spot by the driveway. Plus they're careless and step on plants, or even get too close with the lawn mowers and shred things. Like the sprouts from my bulbs. But the fern choking one of the bushes? God forbid they touch that. And I keep pulling clover and other weeds out of the impatiens, but those are harder to notice unless you're walking the row and watering. The fern is really obvious. And big, which is why I haven't tackled it myself yet.

Oh, and we can only tell them to do things if the 'boss' is there cuz they workers are all Hispanic immigrants who say they don't speak English. El jefe is Americano, though.

Bah, I'm just bitter about my poor shredded bulbs. And that damn fern. But everything else looks pretty good right now.

Between a few long matches on Wii Tennis and crocheting my ass off, my arm is now dead. Time to head off. Zhai'helleva.

She is considering going to the Hellboy II midnight showing with us next week, which will be a particularly painful one for me because I have a plane leaving at 8 a.m. the next morning with my aunt to go hang with The Dude in Denver for a couple of days.* I’m going to be busy even if I don’t manage to get a job, it seems.

*I will not be there when Eddie Izzard is, alas. Given that I left Oregon before his performance in Portland, I’m suspecting some sort of evil force at work.

Been drawing comics.

Looking at some of the stuff I've written for Dumnestor's Heroes, I'm actually kind of worried by how... not funny it is. I mean, there's generally something ridiculous going on, but the strips don't really have jokes as such. The one I just drew, the punch line is weak, and the closest thing to an actual gag in the comic is how the necromancer apparently takes it for granted that in order to grant the dead the ability to speak, you have to wear a dead cat on your head.

Also, it kind of dawned on me that the 'joke' of the extra story I'm drawing for Creative Anachronism is that Armand thinks he's 'won' because his wife is tall, blonde, busty, and dumb as a box of rocks, while Gerard, were he at all inclined to consider it a contest, would think he had because his wife is short, red-headed, skinny, and smart as a whip. *sigh* Only in our fantasies.

End of Food Diary [02 Jul 2008|08:17pm]

alicorn24
I am no longer going to post a food diary here. For one thing, I'm having trouble remembering what I've been eating, and for another, the diary's novelty and resulting effectiveness in getting me to control my food intake have worn off. Also, I don't think anyone was really that interested in a blow-by-blow of my calorie inhalation.

That having been said, I make a mean lentil soup, and my roommate's garlic and dill potatoes are awesome.

Mkay, so I don't hardly ever watch So You Think You Can Dance, but srsly, Kherrington and Twitch would so totally have my votes. They are intense!! And Joshua and Katee are pretty insane, too, but honestly. I wish I could dance like that o_0 How much FUN would that be?? That Mia choreographer lady (I hear you dance aficionados *cringing*...hang on!) is sheer genius. Those routines were unbelievable. UNBELIEVABLE.
